“Excuse me,” the boy said politely. “Could I have a glass of water?”
The girl looked at him closely. He seemed tired and worn out.

Meet the pioneer:
The doctor in this story was Dr. Howard Atwood Kelly (1858–1943) a distinguished physician, who was one of the four founding doctors of Johns Hopkins, the first medical research university in the USA. Howard Kelly, the second of nine children, was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1858 to Henry Kuhl Kelly, a prosperous sugar broker, and his wife Louisa Warner. He was a bright and conscientious student who showed marked leadership qualities even as a young schoolboy. As an adult, Dr. Kelly kept several dozen cages in his home, filled with different types of reptiles, turtles, and bugs. He also learned how to handle rattlesnakes and harvest their venom.
Howard Kelly grew to be a brilliant man with wide ranging interests. He dabbled in botany, natural history, anthropology, and politics. During his long and successful medical career, Kelly was responsible for many useful medical innovations and inventions.
